  C.J. patted him on the shoulder. “Maybe you didn’t miss. Let’s go check for a blood trail.”

  They left the boulder and headed for the spot where the doe grazed. When they reached the spot they squatted down. Tanner looked around, but all he saw were tracks left by the deer.

  But then C.J. smiled and pointed with his finger. “I think this is a drop of blood.”

  Tanner scooted over and bent down close to the ground. He examined the moss-covered earth and spotted a tiny crimson fleck. “If that’s blood the doe isn’t bleeding very badly.”

  C.J. scanned the dense woods where the doe disappeared. “So what? It’s still bleeding. That means you must have hit it. So let’s go find it. And tonight we’ll feast like kings.”
